Housekeeping

13 August 2024

The “Show season” is now over for us, with the final run at the Great Yorkshire, where despite torrential rain, Cameron and Reece brought home some excellent accolades. With show animals now out in the fields doing what comes naturally, we hope to be breeding future winners.

This month we have our annual “Estate meeting”  where all of the team get together and go through some housekeeping, Heath and Safety and de-brief on the past year. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on the year, highlight the successes and challenges. Over a period of several years we can see patterns develop and check them against our plans. Communication has never been easier, but its sometimes important to sit down and make time to reflect.

Jim and Poul hosted this months estate “Walk and Talk” where we rotate turns around the estate for people to host the rest of the team and showcase what they get up to. With estate maintenance as their main role, Jim and Poul have a pretty varied job, so they concentrated on the recent wetlands project which they were involved in and a stint showing us all how to fence. Learning to tie a fencing knot with wire and snap high-tensile wire with bare hands is now a skill the whole team have perfected (almost).

Milli and Darren from Tribe Yarns are finally moving into their newly renovated unit at Comielaw. Bursting at the seams, they have spent the past 12 months, shoehorned into the estate office and have tolerated all of our normal daily activity. We will be sorry to see them move, but delighted it’s to one of the estate conversions. Their arrival will take the total headcount at Comielaw to 18 people working full time – not bad from a redundant farm complex back in 2016.

Bowhouse is hosting Space to Breath exhibition showcasing Sheila Girling and Sir Anthony Caro’s work. This world class exhibition is a privilege to have on the estate and brings a steady footfall for the duration. If you have not already seen it, it’s well worth a look.
