I was extremely fortunate to travel to New Zealand last month and while I was there I visited many wildlife reserves and sanctuaries. The wildlife was outstanding with an amazing range from insect to bird life.
The most astonishing part of the trip was the knowledge of the general population in the need for conservation programs to be completed in their entirety. This includes where massive “hard edge” conservation is needed – this mean controlling species number, not destruction, but management of species. Everyone in the country understands what must be done to protect their unique wildlife.
Back in the UK, it is lambing time and nesting time for many species of ground birds and others. These defenceless, often in decline, species need protection at this crucial time. I’m grateful we are in Scotland where the general license issue by Scottish natural heritage remain unchallenged, so far…
